Black Lives Matter is getting attention on a global scale.
And its impact is being felt right here in the United States.
The group has gained attention on the right with its viral campaign to demand more police officers, as well as with a recent appearance on a late-night talk show in which Cox spoke out against police brutality and racism.
And now, with Cox joining other activists in criticizing the president’s comments, the movement is gaining traction in the public consciousness.
The comedian, who recently opened her own media company, Black Women, has also received praise for her outspokenness on race.
“I think there’s a little bit of anger in this country right now,” Cox told The Daily Beast in an interview last week.
“The media is not paying attention to what we’re saying, because there’s not a lot that’s going on.
We have to be able to speak up because the world is not ready for that.”
Cox, who is African American, said she believes Trump has a lot to answer for by “giving in” to white supremacists and neo-Nazis in the past.
Cox is one of several celebrities who have recently called out the president in recent weeks, including Kate McKinnon, who shared her own anti-Trump video on social media.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member called out Trump for supporting racist white supremacists.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, a Black woman who wrote an op-ed for the New York Times last month calling for an end to Trump’s policies, said that she had “a lot of support” from Black women who have been “deeply disturbed” by the president.
“This is really a moment for all of us to stand up, not just Black women,” Zeta, who has also written books, said.
“This is a moment to stand on our feet and not be afraid to be ourselves.
And we’re all in this together.”
The 2016 election, she continued, “was a wake-up call for us as a society to start to listen to each other and to not be ashamed of our differences.
We’re all so much more than that, and so much stronger together than we were even a year ago.”
Zeta- Jones, who was nominated for an NAACP Image Award last year, said the movement had become a “national conversation” because of the protests.
“You know, this is the most important election of our time.
This is not about a presidential candidate,” she said.”
We’re the first to be speaking out about the injustices and the racism and the violence in this city.
It’s really about the issues that we care about and are fighting for, and we are not going to let anyone tell us who to vote for.”
She said Black women are not “free riders” on the national stage, but are “trying to do what we can do as an American community to create a better world.”
In addition to Black women, the group is making a point of attacking the president on the issues of climate change and health care.
It is pushing the White House to take on the opioid crisis, which the White the president is blaming for the spike in deaths, and calling for the creation of a national health care program that could provide universal coverage to everyone.
“If we can’t have health care, we can have a safety net,” Zetas Jones said.
