NEW YORK – A boy who went missing from his parents’ New York apartments more than five years ago was found dead on a Brooklyn street on Thursday, the police said.

The boy was found by a resident of the block where the parents live, Brooklyn police said in a statement.

The boy was in his 20s.

The police said it was not clear if the boy’s body was discovered by the resident of that block.

The New York Police Department said in 2016 that it had recovered the remains of an unidentified boy in a wooded area of the city.

A search of the woods was abandoned in August and police were not able to locate the boy, police said at the time.

The case prompted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to call for more funding for the city’s missing children program.

In 2017, the family of a 14-year-old boy in New York also filed a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging that he was beaten, burned and starved.
