FBI investigators are examining whether the alleged child sex ring operated by disgraced former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and his former campaign chairman, Tony Podesta, is connected to a child porn site, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation by the FBI.FBI Director James Comey said last week the probe was still in its infancy and could take several months to complete.
In his first major public remarks on the scandal, Comey also suggested there was no evidence that Podesta or his associates were involved in the online sex ring.
Comey said he did not think there was a “circumstantial basis” to believe that Podesta and his associates or anyone associated with them were involved.
He also said it would be impossible to prove that any of the alleged participants were involved because of the time it took to put together the alleged ring.
Podesta was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee and de Blasio was New York mayor when the alleged sex ring was set up in 2013.
Investigators are looking into whether the ring used fake names and emails to communicate and how the group used the Internet to hide its true identity, according the person familiar.
The probe comes after the release of the FBI’s first report into the 2016 presidential election, which concluded that the campaign was infiltrated by Russian operatives, who hacked into voter data and released it to WikiLeaks in an attempt to help elect Donald Trump.
